Is salmon-flavored CBD meant for dogs and cats?
Yes! Salmon is one of those foods that is great for both cats and dogs! Strong scents may sometimes catch us humans off-guard, but the stinkier the better when it comes to pets.
Why do you add flavoring to the oil in the first place?
We add flavoring to the oil because it can be a little “skunky” in its raw form. Dogs and cats have a sense of smell that far exceeds that of humans. In fact, a cat’s sense of smell is about 14 times more acute than a human’s; but dogs can have a sense of smell that is 10,000 to 100,000 times more acute than that of humans! With a sniffer that powerful, they can also be rather particular. Adding the flavoring helps to mellow the odor of the oil so that it’s easier for your pets to take.
There’s a little more to it than that, though.
Ever heard of the “Entourage Effect?” We’ll break it down for you. The theory behind the Entourage Effect is that there is great efficacy when CBD is present with other basic molecules and compounds found naturally in the plant. This means that not only other cannabinoids, but also terpenes (responsible for taste and smell), as well as plant fats and acids, that occur naturally in the plant. While the research is far from complete on this, the evidence that has been collected thus far supports the theory. One could say that our oils are “stinkier” because they are more complete in how they are distilled. That’s one reason why we add flavoring.
Distillation brings out the odor, too.
Oil is refined through distillation – the same process that is used with grains to make alcohol, as well as countless other applications (water too). Molecules are literally boiled off of the original solution, leaving a more “pure” and refined product as the result. Weight or physical mass is lost during this distillation process and that lost weight helps to attribute to the Entourage Effect – especially when it comes to the terpenes. The terpenes aren’t that pleasant to deal with in hemp extract because of their strong taste and odor, but they along with naturally occurring fats, waxes and pigments give the oil a slightly darker color.
Does the salmon flavoring affect the the quality of the oil?
In short, no. The amount of salmon flavoring in the bottles is high enough to help with improving the taste, but low enough that it doesn’t impact the active ingredients. The flavoring only makes up about 1/30th of the 15ml package. To give you an idea of just how much flavoring is actually used in each bottle, that’s about 1/4 of a dropper full. Not that much at all, but it makes a huge difference in the quality of taste for your pet.
