CBD FAQs for Pets
Important: ABSC Organics CBD oil has been clinically tested and shown to be safe in dogs. That said, every pet is different. Please consult your veterinarian before starting any new supplement, especially if your pet is on other medications.
About CBD for Pets
CBD (cannabidiol) is a naturally occurring compound found in hemp plants. It interacts with the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors found in all mammals, including dogs and cats. The ECS plays a role in regulating pain, inflammation, mood, appetite, and neurological function.
When your pet takes CBD oil, the CBD binds to CB1 and CB2 receptors throughout their body. This can help modulate pain signals, reduce inflammation, and support normal neurological activity. ABSC Organics Pure CBD Oil is full-spectrum, meaning it contains CBD along with other beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes that work together in what researchers call the “entourage effect.”
ABSC Organics CBD oil has been tested in three clinical trials at Colorado State University. The pharmacokinetics trial published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science (2018) confirmed that our CBD oil is well-tolerated by dogs with no serious adverse effects at clinical doses.
The most common finding was a mild, temporary elevation in the liver enzyme ALP (alkaline phosphatase). This is not a sign of liver damage but is something your vet may want to monitor with periodic bloodwork, especially at higher doses.
Our clinical trials focused on dogs specifically. However, many cat owners use our product and have reported positive results. We recommend starting cats at a lower dose and working with your vet. We hope to sponsor feline clinical trials in the future.
Side effects are uncommon at recommended doses. The most frequently reported side effects in clinical studies were mild and included:
- Temporary elevation of liver enzyme ALP (monitored via bloodwork)
- Mild drowsiness, especially when first starting or at higher doses
- Occasional soft stool during the first few days
Serious side effects have not been observed in any of the three clinical trials at CSU. If you notice any unusual behavior, reduce the dose and consult your veterinarian.
CBD is metabolized by the liver through the cytochrome P450 enzyme system, the same system that processes many common medications. This means CBD can potentially affect how your pet’s body handles other drugs, especially anticonvulsants like phenobarbital and potassium bromide.
In the CSU epilepsy trial, all dogs continued their existing seizure medications alongside CBD without problems. However, you should always tell your veterinarian that your pet is taking CBD so they can adjust dosing or monitoring as needed. This is especially important for pets on liver-metabolized medications.
ABSC Organics has clinical trial data supporting the use of CBD for two specific conditions in dogs:
- Epilepsy/Seizures: 89% of dogs in the CSU trial showed reduced seizure frequency (published in JAVMA, 2019)
- Osteoarthritis: Dogs showed measurable improvements in mobility and pain scores (published in Frontiers in Veterinary Science, 2021)
Beyond these studied conditions, many pet owners report improvements in anxiety, general mobility, appetite, sleep quality, and overall comfort. These are anecdotal reports and we have not yet conducted clinical trials on all of these conditions. Read customer testimonials here.
Full-spectrum CBD oil contains the full range of cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids naturally present in the hemp plant. This includes CBD as the primary cannabinoid, along with smaller amounts of CBG, CBC, and others, plus terpenes like myrcene, limonene, and beta-caryophyllene.
CBD isolate is pure CBD with everything else stripped out.
Research suggests that full-spectrum products are more effective because of the “entourage effect,” where the various plant compounds work together and enhance each other’s benefits. ABSC Organics uses full-spectrum CBD oil. We do not use isolate.
Our CBD oil is extracted from hemp plants, not marijuana. While both are cannabis plants, hemp contains less than 0.3% THC (the compound that produces a “high”), which is the federal legal limit. Our extraction process eliminates psychoactive THC while preserving the beneficial cannabinoids and terpenes. Your pet will not experience any mind-altering effects from ABSC Organics CBD oil.
Dosing and Administration
Each bottle comes with a measured dropper. You can give the oil directly into your pet’s mouth, add it to their food, or put it on a treat. The key is making sure your pet gets the full dose. Many pet owners find that squeezing the drops directly into the cheek and gently massaging works well. Our oil is flavored with natural chicken flavoring that most dogs and cats find appealing. We also offer a salmon flavor option in our 600mg bottles.
Dosing is based on your pet’s body weight. We have found that our Baseline Dosage works for roughly 70% of pets. You can find the specific number of drops per pound on our dosing chart.
For pets with more severe conditions (such as intractable seizures), some owners increase the dose gradually up to 10x Baseline Dosage, which is consistent with what is being studied in dose escalation research. For these higher-dose situations, we recommend our 2400mg bottle, which has a higher concentration per drop and is more economical for larger doses.
Always start at the baseline dose and increase gradually. Give each dose level at least 1 to 2 weeks before adjusting. Consult your veterinarian for guidance specific to your pet’s condition.
This varies by condition and individual pet. Some owners report noticing changes within the first few days, particularly for anxiety and pain. For seizure management, it may take 4 to 8 weeks of consistent daily dosing to see a clear pattern of reduced seizure frequency. The CSU clinical trials ran for 12 weeks to establish efficacy data.
Consistency matters more than anything. Give the oil at roughly the same times each day and do not skip doses if you can avoid it.
Our clinical trials were conducted on adult dogs, so we do not have specific safety data for puppies. That said, several pet owners have used our oil at baseline dosage for young dogs and reported good results. If your puppy has a condition like epilepsy, we recommend discussing CBD with your veterinarian before starting.
About Our Product
Everything is done in Colorado. Our hemp is grown organically in Colorado, processed in Colorado, and bottled in Colorado. ABSC Organics is headquartered in Berthoud, CO, just south of Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
Yes. Our hemp is grown using USDA Organic practices in Colorado. We maintain strict quality control throughout the entire process from farm to finished product.
Every batch of ABSC Organics CBD oil is third-party lab tested for CBD concentration, THC levels, pesticides, heavy metals, and microbial contaminants. We test to verify that the CBD content matches what is on the label and that there are no harmful substances present.
Yes. Because we use a natural, full-spectrum extract from a real plant, there can be slight variations in color, consistency, and aroma from batch to batch. Differences in sunlight, water, and soil during the growing season affect how each harvest looks and smells. What does not change is the CBD concentration, which we test and verify for every batch. The product’s effectiveness is tied to its cannabinoid content, not its color.
Store it at room temperature away from direct sunlight. Refrigeration is not required but can extend the shelf life of an unopened bottle by up to 2 years. Do not freeze CBD oil. Do not refrigerate balm or topical products.
Most pet CBD brands have never been tested in a clinical trial. Our product has been through three published studies at Colorado State University. That research cost real money to conduct, and it is the reason veterinarians can recommend our product with confidence.
You are also paying for genuinely organic Colorado-grown hemp, full-spectrum extraction that preserves the terpene profile, third-party lab testing on every batch, and a product with a consistent, verified cannabinoid concentration. Many cheaper CBD oils use isolate, have inconsistent potency, or come from hemp of unknown origin.
For most dogs, a bottle of our 600mg oil ($64.99) lasts about 30 days at baseline dosage. Subscribe and save 25% on recurring orders.
